Vitamin-Fuelled Vitality

The misconception that you get everything you need from a well-balanced diet becomes increasingly further from the truth as you age. First, for many people the ability to digest and absorb nutrients decreases. A common finding among older people is that hydrochloric acid production in the stomach declines, immediately affecting the ability to make use of protein, vitamins and minerals. So too, for most of us at least, does exercise and/or general physical activity, and consequently appetite. Less food means fewer nutrients. Circulation, at least for many, also becomes worse with age, so fewer nutrients make it from the gut to the brain. An underlying cause of many of the diseases of later life – cancer heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s – is inflammation. Increases in underlying inflammatory processes in the brain, which can ultimately lead to neuronal damage, can leave the brain in dire need of certain nutrients. The Famous Five are:

  • B Vitamins
  • Antioxidants
  • Trace elements
  • Essential Fats
  • Phospholipids
